Geography Of Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is rich in forest produce, Where we have mainly two category of Forest Produce ie. Primary forest produce and Secondary forest produce. The primary forest produce is primarily associated with Lumbering industry while the secondary are associated with Non Lumbering industry.

The primary forest produce in Madhya Pradesh got from Teak, Sal and Bamboo While the secondary forest produce are from Tendupatta, Sealing wax,Sal seeds, Darking nut,Harra and Gum.

  • Major forest produce of Madhya Pradesh :- (Lumbering Industry Based)

  1. Teak :- (Tectona Grandis)

The teak of Madhya Pradesh has significant place in in Timber industries of the world. The maximum teak forest in state are found in Narmada Son river valley, it is primarily used in furniture & craft industry.

Districts :- Hoshangabad, Betul, Chhindwara, Jabalpur mandala, Seoni, Narsinghpur.

  1. Sal :- (Shorea Robusta) :-

Sal  trees are primarily found in eastern Madhya Pradesh, majority of its part is now in Chhattisgarh. However Mandla, Balaghat, Umriya, Sidhi, and Shahdol districts have good category of sal. The sal wood is used to prepare railway sleeper,its factory is in Budhni (Sehore).

  1. Bamboo :- (Dendrocalamus Strictus)

Bamboo in India is found in in the area which receives more than 75 cm rainfall. In Madhya Pradesh southern and South eastern region is famous for bamboo production. The bamboo is used to manufacture paper industry.

The state has two major manufacturing units for paper manufacturing Nepanagar (Burhanpur) and Amlai (Shahdol- Birla group).

Secondary forest produce of Madhya Pradesh (Non Lumbering Based)

Mainly – TENDU PATTA, GUM,HARRA,MAHUA, SEALING WAX,SAL SEEDS.CATECHU.

Tendu patta :- Madhya Pradesh is the largest producer of tendu patta(60% approx). Tendu patta is used to manufacture Biri.

The tendu patta act was passed by the state government in 1964. Presently is it is under Rajya Laghu Vanopaj Sangh.

Tendupatta collection program is included  with cooperative societies in 1988.

In 2012 the tendu patta collectors got 750 rupees per Bora.

Biri industries in state are in Sagar and Jabalpur district.

Gum :- The gum is procured from Babul (Acacia Nilotica),Salai (Boswellia Serrata),Khair(Acacia Catechu),Kulu(Sterculin Urens),and Dhoura(Anogeissus Latofoin) plant.

It is used in different food products and in the preparation of herbal medicines.

It is is an important secondary forest produce of state.

Districts – Jhabua,Dhar, Alirajpur, Nimar, Ratlam, Gwalior, Morena,Shivpuri.

Harra :- It is an important ingredient of Triphala. It mainly found in Shahdol, Umriya, Mandla, Balaghat and Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh. It also used in tanning industry, ink industry etc.

Mahua :- It has certain herbal values and also used to in making Alcohol.

Districts – Chhindwara, Mandla, Balaghat, Betul, Jhabua, Alirajpur.

Sealing wax :- (Lakh)

The sealing wax is used in in cosmetic industry,bangle industry and in medicinal preparations. It primary found in Jabalpur seoni, shehdol, Mandla,and Balaghat region.

Government sealing wax factory is in Umaria.

Catechu:- It is procured from Khair plant.It used in in paint industry, herbal medicine industry and paan industry.

The Catechu  factory in state are in Banmore, Morena and Shivpuri.

Sal Seeds :- Sal seeds hai approximately 20% edible oils, they also used to manufacture artificial butter and  in poultry farms as it is a great source of protein.

The sal trees are abundant in 12 districts of Madhya Pradesh.

Darking nut :- Bhilawa

It found in Chhindwara, Shahdol, Umaria and Mandla district.It is mainly used in medicinal preparation and ink industry.

Its factory is in Chhindwara.

– Other Minor forest products of state:- Achar, Arjun, Awala, Ashvgandha, Safed Musli, Giloy, Bach,Kullu,Baheda etc.
